High School Runners

Summer Cross Country Training

7th -12th grade

June 10-August 3 (8 Weeks)

When track season ends and the summer is about to begin, it is time to start thinking about cross country training. It can be hard to stay motivated in the summer months without a team environment and organized training plan. For the summer months we want to provide support for young athletes to prepare for their cross country endeavors. Whether they have high hopes of State Championships and college scholarships or if they just simply want to push themselves further than they have before, we are there for their training needs. In this program each runner will receive a personal schedule suited for their mileage and training needs. Fall improvement is made in the summer and we are excited to help runners take a stride forward in their pre-season training.

In the 8 week session between June and the start of the school year we hope to provide athletes with a solid summer of base training that includes more than just direction in their running plan. We also will provide instruction on warm ups, stretching, injury prevention routines, drills and more. Summer is also a great time for learning. Every couple weeks runners will get to hear from coaches and guest speakers on topics like running in college, nutrition, injury prevention, footwear choices and goal setting.

8 Weeks of Training Including

  • Summer base workouts, Fartleks, hills, tempos and more

When/Where

Athletes have access to all RunningLane Pro (our premium package) practice times. We change up locations each week to ensure runners have the opportunity to make a couple practice sessions. Fridays are exclusively for our High School Runners. We will send out a weekly newsletter with practice times.

Get to know the Coaches

This program will be led by RunningLane Head Coach, Will Rodgers and Coach Alana Scarano.

Will Rodgers

Will has been the “genius” behind the RunningLane training philosophy since graduating from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where he earned a BS in Biology with an Exercise Physiology cognate. He competed for both the Cross Country and Track teams and was a five-time qualifier to the NCAA Division II National Championships including XC, the outdoor 1500m, and the indoor Mile. He still holds several program records at UAH.

During his coaching career, Will has helped over 200 athletes reach personal best times in distances ranging from the 800-meter dash to ultra-marathons. To date, he has helped over 50+ runners qualify for the Boston Marathon and has been featured in running magazines such as Runner's World, Under Armour - Map My Run. Will also coached high school cross-country teams to state championship berths as well as several high school runners to individual state titles.

Currently, Will coaches all levels of athletes, from those working to win their age group divisions at local road races, to those with Olympic Trials aspirations. Will has a special talent for helping struggling athletes renew their passion for racing and have break-through performances. In his spare time, Will enjoys spending time with his lovely wife, reading, running trails, and continuing to compete in local road races.

Alana Scarano

Alana’s desire to coach started in college when she worked for her college cross country coach as an office assistant. During this time she became a student of the sport and wanted to pursue coaching as a career. Whilst pursuing a graduate degree Alana coached at the University of California, San Diego, where she helped lead the Tritons to a top 10 ranking in the NCAA DII West Region. Moreover, at UCSD she assisted in coaching multiple national qualifiers. Upon moving to Huntsville, she assisted the Huntsville High School track and cross country team, which brought home numerous All-State performances during that time. In her coaching experiences, Alana has learned she is passionate about all stages of development for runners. However, she finds working with youth the most rewarding as one can truly help athletes in a very important stage of development. She truly believes that running is a lifelong sport meant to build health, relationships and character.

Alana is still very active in her own running career. In college she became a 5-time NCAA All-American in cross country and track and 2-time National Champion in the 5k and 10k. She was also part of 3 National Championship winning track teams. Most recently, Alana won the 2018 Rocket City Marathon, Bridge Street Half Marathon and Huntsville Half Marathon.

If this time last year someone would have said to me, "By April 2016 you'll have run 3 5Ks and will be running 15 miles every week (and enjoying it!)," I'd have laughed and made a joke about being chased by a scary clown. But, here I am, just finished my 3rd 5K with a time a little bit better than the last.  I'm really glad RunningLane encourages beginners. As someone who has never run or even been very athletic, it's nice to have guidance and a place to get my questions answered. Big thanks to my coach, Michael for setting me up with a program that I can stick with and challenges me.  My program is just that…mine.  It is tailored to my fitness level and ability and having someone to check in with each week keeps me accountable. It’s working!  In 14 weeks with my coach and RunningLane my BMI has dropped 5 points, my cholesterol went from over 200 to 165, and my resting heart rate has lowered because my heart is healthier and happier!  Thank you, RunningLane!
